At Ancient Ceremonies, your safety, well-being, and spiritual integrity are our highest priorities. Our work is rooted in traditional Andean teachings, and our role is to guide you through these sacred plant medicines with respect, professionalism, and deep reverence for their origins. Every guest who joins us places their trust in our hands, and we honour that trust by maintaining a safe, ethical, and deeply grounded environment.
To uphold this level of care, we begin by exploring your health history during your Connect Call — your very first step when considering working with us. This conversation allows us to understand your background, your intentions, and whether these medicines are appropriate for you at this stage of your life.
Following your Connect Call, we ask all guests to complete a medical questionnaire as part of the booking process. Please answer each question openly and honestly, as this information allows us to assess suitability and ensure your safety throughout your journey with us.
Eligibility and Participant Responsibility
Every person’s health history is unique, which is why we review each situation individually. If any of the medical considerations listed in the following sections apply to you, this does not automatically mean you cannot participate. Instead, it means we need to speak with you so we can understand your circumstances fully and explore what options may be available.
This is why the Connect Call is so important — it gives us the opportunity to assess your situation personally, ask relevant questions, and, when appropriate, work alongside your medical practitioner to determine the safest and most supportive path forward.
What is essential is honesty. If a guest books a retreat while withholding relevant medical or psychological information, and we discover this upon arrival or during the retreat, participation may need to be declined for safety reasons, and a refund cannot be issued. This protects both you and the group.
If any concerns arise during your medical questionnaire or Connect Call, our team will contact you directly to discuss them with care. In many cases, we are able to find solutions, adjustments, or timing recommendations — sometimes in collaboration with your healthcare provider — that help you move forward safely.
By booking a retreat with Ancient Ceremonies, you confirm that you have read and understand these Medical and Safety Guidelines, that you are transparent about your health history, and that you agree to participate at your own responsibility.
We commit to providing a safe, professionally held, and deeply supportive environment — and in return, we ask for your honesty, openness, and cooperation so we can protect your well-being and the well-being of those around you.
General Medical Precautions
Working with Ayahuasca or Huachuma (San Pedro) can have significant effects on the body and nervous system, which is why accurate medical disclosure is essential. Please inform us of any past or current health conditions, as well as any medications or supplements you are taking.
The following conditions often require additional assessment — and in many cases may prevent participation:
Heart disease or chronic high blood pressure
Liver, kidney, or pancreatic conditions
Diabetes
Tuberculosis
Pregnancy or breastfeeding
Ayahuasca and Huachuma (San Pedro) should not be taken during pregnancy or while breastfeeding.
If you have a health condition not listed here, please contact us before booking so we can review it together.
While these medicines are generally considered safe when taken under the guidance of experienced facilitators, certain medical conditions can lead to serious complications if not handled correctly. Your transparency allows us to ensure the safest and most supportive environment possible.
Specific Medical Conditions
Certain medical conditions can create moderate to severe risks when working with Ayahuasca or Huachuma (San Pedro). Although these medicines are safe when used responsibly in a controlled and professionally held environment, they can interact with different health conditions in ways that require careful consideration.
Please read the following sections thoroughly. If any of these conditions apply to you, discuss them with us during your Connect Call and through the medical questionnaire so we can determine whether participation is safe for you.
Epilepsy and Seizure Disorders
If you have a personal or family history of epilepsy or seizures, it is essential that you inform Ancient Ceremonies before booking.
Ayahuasca and Huachuma (San Pedro) can, in rare cases, trigger seizures in individuals with a predisposition. Proper screening and medical review are necessary to determine whether it is appropriate for you to participate.
Diabetes
Working with Ayahuasca or Huachuma (San Pedro) carries additional considerations for individuals living with diabetes.
Both medicines contain naturally occurring MAO inhibitors, which can affect blood sugar levels and may interact with insulin or oral diabetes medications.
Important points to be aware of:
MAOIs can cause fluctuations in blood glucose
They may alter your need for anti-diabetic medication during and after ceremony
Individuals with unstable or advanced diabetes are not recommended to participate
Those with mild or well-managed diabetes must discuss their condition with us prior to booking
Dietary adjustments may be required before the retreat
A full assessment is required so we can determine if participation is safe.
Heart and Cardiovascular Conditions
Individuals with chronic heart disease or uncontrolled high blood pressure are strongly discouraged from participating in Ayahuasca or Huachuma (San Pedro) ceremonies.
These medicines can temporarily raise blood pressure, which may pose serious — even life-threatening — risks to anyone with:
Heart disease
Angina
Arrhythmias
Chronic high blood pressure
History of stroke or cardiovascular instability
If you have a mild, fully managed heart condition, you must discuss this with us before booking.
Those with serious or uncontrolled cardiovascular conditions cannot participate for safety reasons.
Liver and Kidney Conditions
The liver and kidneys are responsible for filtering and metabolizing many of the compounds involved in these medicines.
Ayahuasca and Huachuma (San Pedro) contain MAO inhibitors and other active components that can place additional strain on these organs.
For this reason:
Individuals with moderate or severe liver impairment cannot participate
Individuals with kidney disease may not be eligible
Mild or resolved conditions must be discussed with us before booking
Your safety is paramount, and compromised liver or kidney function can increase the risk of adverse reactions.
Hypothyroidism
If you have hypothyroidism, participation is generally safe as long as you inform us beforehand.
Key notes:
You may continue taking your prescribed thyroid medication
We will monitor your dosage and any relevant symptoms during your retreat
You must disclose your condition during your Connect Call and on the medical form
While hypothyroidism is not a contraindication, it must be managed responsibly.
Other Medical Concerns
If you have a condition not mentioned here — including autoimmune disorders, neurological issues, or chronic illnesses — please inform us during your Connect Call.
Some conditions may require additional review or clearance.
Your safety depends on full transparency, and we will always assess your situation with care and professionalism.
Your safety depends on full openness and transparency. Before joining any retreat, you must inform Ancient Ceremonies of all relevant personal history, including:
Past or current drug use or dependency
Serious physical or psychological health issues
All prescription medications, supplements, and herbal products you are taking
If you are currently under the care of a psychiatrist, taking psychopharmaceutical medication, or have a history of substance abuse, it is essential that you discuss this with us during your Connect Call and in your medical form.
The following require mandatory disclosure and assessment:
Treatment or supervision by a psychiatrist
Use of psychiatric medications
History of drug addiction (heroin, cocaine, amphetamines, etc.)
Any past or present patterns of psychological instability
These factors do not automatically disqualify you, but failure to disclose them does.
Please also reach out to us if you are using:
Herbal medicines
Mood-altering supplements
Any plant-based products with psychoactive or neurological effects
Some natural products may be unsafe when combined with Ayahuasca or Huachuma (San Pedro). If you are unsure, speak with us.
Additionally:
Do not start or stop any medication before speaking with your doctor
Please notify us of any medication you need to take prior to the retreat
Always consult us if you have untreated tuberculosis, weak heart function, impaired liver function, pregnancy, or any condition that might interact dangerously with these medicines
Your honesty allows us to protect you and provide an environment where healing can unfold safely.
Working with Ayahuasca or Huachuma (San Pedro) is not only a physical process — it can open deep emotional and psychological layers. Because these medicines access parts of the psyche that are often protected or suppressed, psychological readiness is essential.
At Ancient Ceremonies, we take psychological safety extremely seriously. A stable mental and emotional foundation is required before engaging with these medicines, and we thoroughly assess every guest to ensure the work supports — rather than destabilises — their well-being.
Mental Health Conditions That Require Caution
Certain psychological conditions significantly increase the risk of adverse reactions. These medicines can amplify underlying patterns, intensify symptoms, or trigger episodes in individuals with a history of instability.
The following conditions require careful evaluation and, in many cases, may prevent participation:
Borderline personality disorder
Bipolar disorder or manic episodes
Schizophrenia or schizoaffective disorders
Psychosis or a history of psychotic episodes
Paranoia or Paranoid Personality Disorder (PPD)
Dissociative disorders
Severe PTSD that is currently active or overwhelming
Visual or auditory hallucinations (past or present, diagnosed or undiagnosed)
Severe or untreated depression
Severe or destabilising anxiety disorders
These conditions do not automatically exclude someone from joining a retreat, but they must be disclosed so we can assess risk accurately. In many cases, participation will not be advisable due to the potential for psychological harm.
Screening and Evaluation
To ensure safety, we assess psychological stability through:
Your Connect Call (our first point of contact)
Your medical and psychological questionnaire
Additional follow-up questions if needed
Your honesty allows us to protect you and maintain a safe group environment. We look at your history, current symptoms, medication use, and overall emotional stability before approving participation.
Why a Controlled Setting Matters
Ayahuasca and Huachuma (San Pedro) should never be taken without experienced guidance.
Our retreats provide:
A stable, grounded setting
Traditional Andean ceremonial structure
Continuous supervision
Clear boundaries and emotional safety
Immediate support if difficult material arises
This container ensures that you can move through your experience safely, without being overwhelmed or retraumatised.
Emotional and Psychological Support During Retreat
We offer active support throughout the retreat, including:
One-on-one check-ins when needed
Group integration sessions
Grounding practices
Guidance for understanding difficult emotions or insights
Clear direction for the days following ceremony
Our integration support helps you make sense of what arises and prevents psychological overload.
Our Commitment
At Ancient Ceremonies, psychological safety is central to everything we do.
We prioritise:
Stability
Integrity
Responsible guidance
Protection of all participants
Every measure is taken to ensure you are supported, witnessed, and held in a way that is safe, ethical, and aligned with traditional practice.
Plant medicine work requires professionalism, responsibility, and a deep respect for the people who come to heal. At Ancient Ceremonies, we honour this responsibility with the highest safety standards in both physical and psychological care.
Over the years, we have guided many individuals — each with their own story, history, and intention — through powerful, transformative healing processes.
Our commitment to proper screening, responsible facilitation, and integration support has resulted in an excellent safety record, with no serious medical or psychological incidents under our care.
This track record is the result of:
Thorough medical and psychological screening
Small group sizes
Experienced, attentive facilitators
Continuous supervision when required
Respect for traditional ceremonial structure
A grounded, non-commercial approach to these ancient practices
Your well-being is central to everything we do. We take no shortcuts, and we never compromise on safety.
Certain substances are extremely dangerous to mix with Ayahuasca or Huachuma (San Pedro).
Because Ayahuasca contains natural MAO inhibitors — and Huachuma (San Pedro) also affects the nervous system — combining these medicines with other psychoactive or stimulant substances can create life-threatening reactions.
These risks include:
Serotonin syndrome
Hypertensive crisis
Seizures
Cardiac arrest
Respiratory distress
Extreme psychological destabilisation
Fatal overdose, even at low doses
For your safety, you must not consume any of the substances listed below during your preparation period, your retreat, or your early integration period.
Stimulants & Amphetamines
Cocaine
Amphetamines
Methamphetamine
Ephedrine
Mephedrone
2C-family stimulants (2C-B, 2C-E, etc.)
Empathogens / Entactogens
MDMA (Ecstasy)
MDA
MDEA
PMA
PMMA
These combinations greatly increase the risk of serotonin syndrome and dangerous cardiovascular reactions.
Opiates & Opioids
Heroin
Morphine
Codeine
Oxycodone
Opium
These substances significantly increase the risk of respiratory failure when mixed with MAO-inhibiting plant medicines.
Psychedelics & Entheogens
The following must not be mixed with Ayahuasca or Huachuma (San Pedro):
Psilocybin mushrooms
LSD
DMT or analogues taken outside a safe ceremonial context
Mescaline or phenethylamines (including Peyote and cactus extracts)
2C-family psychedelics
Research chemicals (NBOMe, DOx, etc.)
Iboga / Ibogaine
5-MeO-DMT
Kambo
These substances can trigger severe neurological, cardiovascular, or psychological reactions.
Cough, Cold, and Over-The-Counter Drugs
Dextromethorphan (DXM)
Any medicine containing “DM,” “DX,” or “Tuss”
DXM mixed with MAOIs is one of the most dangerous drug combinations known.
Synthetic Cannabinoids & Other Recreational Drugs
Synthetic cannabis (“Spice,” “K2”)
Nitrous oxide
Designer drugs
Novel psychoactive substances
Their effects are unpredictable and dangerous when combined with plant medicines.
Other Substances to Avoid
Nutmeg (psychoactive in high doses)
Kratom
Kava
Coca leaf extracts
Any psychoactive plant extract without guidance
If you have taken any of these substances recently
You must disclose this on your Connect Call and in your medical form.
A safe washout period is required, and participation may need to be delayed.
Your safety always comes first.
Some herbal products and natural supplements can interact dangerously with Ayahuasca or Huachuma (San Pedro), especially because of Ayahuasca’s MAO-inhibiting properties.
Even though these remedies are “natural,” they can still create serious cardiovascular, neurological, or serotonergic reactions when combined with plant medicines.
For your safety, the herbal products below must be discontinued at least two weeks before your retreat unless otherwise discussed with us.
Herbal Products That Are Contraindicated
Please avoid the following herbs and natural substances before participating in ceremony:
St. John’s Wort
Kava
Kratom
Ephedra
Ginseng
Yohimbe
Sinicuichi
Rhodiola Rosea
Kanna
Boswellia
Scotch broom
Licorice root
Cannabis (avoid for at least two weeks prior unless otherwise discussed)
Each of these may:
Elevate blood pressure
Interfere with neurotransmitter regulation
Increase the risk of serotonin overload
Strain the heart, liver, or nervous system
Intensify psychological instability during ceremony
This list is not exhaustive — if you take any herbal supplement regularly, please inform us so we can advise you properly.
Why Herbal Contraindications Matter
Many herbal extracts affect:
Serotonin or dopamine levels
Blood pressure and heart rate
Adrenal and stress-response systems
Liver metabolism pathways
When combined with Ayahuasca or Huachuma (San Pedro), these effects can escalate unpredictably.
Your safety depends on a clear system and proper preparation.
When in Doubt
If you are unsure whether an herb or supplement is safe, speak with us during your Connect Call.
We would much rather you ask than assume — this is how we maintain the safest container possible.
Certain prescription medications must be stopped well before working with Ayahuasca or Huachuma (San Pedro). Many of these interact with the natural MAO-inhibiting properties of Ayahuasca or place additional strain on the cardiovascular and nervous systems, making the combination unsafe.
Below are the major medication categories that require caution, medical supervision, and in most cases, complete discontinuation within the appropriate time frame.
Always consult your doctor before stopping any prescribed medication.
MAO Inhibitors (MAOIs)
Must be discontinued 4–6 weeks before ceremony.
Ayahuasca already acts as a natural MAOI. Combining it with pharmaceutical MAOIs can lead to:
Hypertensive crisis
Seizures
Severe fever
Delirium
Coma
Cardiovascular collapse
Absolutely no MAOIs should be taken before or after ceremony.
SSRIs (Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors)
Must be discontinued at least 6 weeks prior (8 weeks for Prozac due to long half-life).
Mixing SSRIs with Ayahuasca or Huachuma (San Pedro) can cause:
Serotonin syndrome (potentially fatal)
Severe cardiovascular stress
Extreme psychological destabilisation
You must allow enough time for your system to clear these medications safely, and withdrawal may require a gradual taper supervised by your doctor.
Other Antidepressants
Includes:
SNRIs
SARIs
NDRIs
Tricyclic antidepressants (TCAs)
Tetracyclic antidepressants
NaSSA medications
Serotonin modulators
These medications can also cause dangerous interactions by affecting serotonin, norepinephrine, or dopamine pathways.
Most require at least 6 weeks of discontinuation before ceremony — always under medical guidance.
Benzodiazepines, Sedatives & CNS Depressants
Examples include: Valium, Xanax, Ativan, sleeping pills, barbiturates.
These substances must be avoided because they can:
Suppress respiratory function
Intensify sedation during ceremony
Trigger dangerous withdrawal if stopped improperly
Interfere with the psychological and emotional process
Discontinuation often requires a slow, medically supervised taper.
Antipsychotics
Antipsychotic medications should not be combined with Ayahuasca or Huachuma (San Pedro) due to:
Neurological instability
Serotonin-dopamine conflicts
Risk of severe agitation, seizures, or blood pressure changes
These medications generally exclude participation for safety reasons.
Blood Pressure & Cardiovascular Medications
Includes:
Beta blockers
ACE inhibitors
Calcium channel blockers
Diuretics
Angiotensin receptor blockers
These medications alter heart rate and blood pressure in ways that may become unpredictable when combined with plant medicines.
Many require 2–6 weeks of discontinuation, depending on the type.
Asthma Inhalers & Respiratory Medications
Certain bronchodilators and asthma medications can cause:
Increased heart rate
Elevated blood pressure
Dangerous interactions with MAOIs
Some are safe, many are not — always disclose what you are using.
Painkillers, Neurological Medications & Stimulants
Some medications taken for pain, migraines, seizures, ADHD, or narcolepsy can be unsafe due to their effects on:
Serotonin
Dopamine
Blood pressure
CNS stimulation
These must be reviewed on a case-by-case basis.
Hormonal & Sympathomimetic Drugs
These include certain thyroid stimulants, adrenal stimulants, and metabolic enhancers.
Some may be safe, others are dangerous — disclosure is essential.
Alcohol & Prescription Interactions
Alcohol should not be mixed with any MAOI-containing plants, nor consumed during the preparation window.
In Summary
If you take any prescription medication, you must disclose it during your Connect Call and on your medical form.
We will evaluate your situation carefully and provide guidance for safe participation.
Never discontinue prescription medication without medical supervision.
Working with Ayahuasca or Huachuma (San Pedro) requires careful medical preparation, especially regarding prescription and over-the-counter medications. Some pharmaceutical drugs can create dangerous or even life-threatening interactions when combined with the natural MAO-inhibiting properties of Ayahuasca.
To support your safety, we have gathered a complete, corrected, and alphabetised list of medications that must not be taken before participating in ceremony. If you are taking any medication on this list — or any medication not listed but affecting your nervous system, mood, blood pressure, or serotonin — please discuss it with us during your Connect Call.

Your safety is our priority. If you currently take any medication listed above, or if you are unsure about something you are using, please speak with us during your Connect Call. It is essential that you never alter, reduce, or stop prescribed medication without guidance from your doctor. We will support you with clear preparation instructions, but all medical changes must be supervised by a qualified healthcare professional.
Although this list applies fully to both Ayahuasca and Huachuma (San Pedro), it is important to understand that Huachuma is generally less restrictive than Ayahuasca from a medical standpoint.
This is because:
Huachuma does not contain the same MAO-inhibiting compounds found in Ayahuasca.
It does not create the same level of interaction with serotonin-based medications.
The cardiovascular load is typically lighter and more gradual.
The nervous system response is more stabilising and grounding for most people.
However, “less restrictive” does not mean casual or risk-free. Huachuma (San Pedro) is still a powerful ancient medicine that affects the heart, nervous system, and emotional landscape. We apply the same level of care, screening, and safety protocols for all participants, regardless of the medicine they choose to work with.
Your full disclosure is essential for us to guide you safely and responsibly.
Our goal with these guidelines is to provide clear, trustworthy information so you can make informed decisions about your healing journey. Plant medicine work is profound and deeply personal, and when approached with respect and proper preparation, it can open the door to genuine transformation.
If you have any questions about medications, supplements, contraindications, or your personal health history, we encourage you to bring them to your Connect Call. We will walk through everything together and determine the safest path forward for your individual situation.
At Ancient Ceremonies, we take your well-being seriously — and we are here to support you every step of the way.
Warm regards,
Rodolfo De Angeli
